Sony PlayStation 3 will lead despite delays

Posted in General at 7:19 pm by corneliusw

Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation 3 will allow the company to maintain its dominance of the video game console market, according to market research firm In-Stat.

Compared to older research, the new predictions suggest that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 could actually lose market share compared to its predecessor, the Xbox, with Nintendo gaining share.

By 2010, the PS3 will hold slightly more than 50 per cent of the market, In-Stat predicts in a report announced yesterday.

This represents almost no change from Sony’s games console market share estimated in November 2005 by Gartner, which showed the new console’s predecessor, the PlayStation 2, with 51 per cent of the market.

The positive prediction for Sony comes despite serious delays which have most recently seen the PS3’s global launch date knocked back to November.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 launched in November 2005, and Nintendo’s upcoming Revolution console is expected to complete a staggered global launch by the time the PS3 appears.

Although Microsoft’s early launch of the Xbox 360 will not be enough to push it past Sony’s predicted 50 per cent market share, it will hold 28.6 per cent of the market by 2010, believes In-Stat senior analyst, Brian O’Rourke, keeping Nintendo in third place with just over 21.2 per cent.

“Microsoft will outship Nintendo in the next generation of consoles due to its head start in launching, its strength in the North American market, and its appeal to older gamers – a demographic that seems to widen with each new generation of consoles,” said O’Rourke in a statement.

However, Gartner’s research late last year estimated that the original Xbox had a larger market share at that time – 34 per cent – than In-Stat now predicts for the Xbox 360.

The Nintendo GameCube, which has generally been acknowledged as a relatively weak performer, had just 15 per cent in Gartner’s survey.

Both Gartner’s 2005 estimates and In-Stat’s 2010 predictions are for similar points in the console’s lifecycles approximately four to five years after launch, when they are generally seen as mature, mainstream products.

As prices fall and next-generation units enter the mainstream, global shipments of all games consoles will surge past the 40 million barrier in 2008, In-Stat predicted, up from around 25 million this year.

However, higher average prices compared to previous generation models will probably prevent the new machines from setting any sales records.

After a sales peak in 2008, In-Stat sees annual shipments of games consoles sliding back below 30 million by 2010 as the current crop of next-generation machines begins to approach the end of their lifespans.

PlayStation 3 will have 60GB hard drive – confirmed

Posted in General at 12:08 pm by corneliusw

Sony have confirmed that the PS3 will ship with a 60GB hard drive – three times the size of the Xbox 360’s HDD. All PS3 bundles will be sold with the HDD, though whether or not a larger drive will be available isn’t clear.

Analysts are speculating that there may be two bundles for sale on launch, offering a 60GB and a 100GB HDD.

At what price though? With current components, such as the Blu-ray optical drive ($350), IBM Cell processor ($230) , Nvidia RSX graphics processor ($70), and XDR RAM ($50), bumping the cost of the console to approximately $800 to produce, it’s hard to see how Sony are going to be able to offer the console and the HDD at a reasonable price.

Due to the ‘fine tuning’ of the console’s Blu-ray capabilities, the PS3 is currently delayed until a worldwide launch in November.

PlayStation 3 Postponed Until November

Posted in General at 2:36 am by corneliusw

In the “who didn’t see this coming?” news of the day Sony has announced that the Playstation 3 won’t be shipping this Spring. A Japanese newspaper is reporting the launch has been pushed back to November in Japan, potentially leaving US high definition gamers PS3-less until 2007. The stated reason for the delay? Copy protection related to the Blu-ray drive. Apparently that preliminary AACS agreement wasn’t enough, or maybe Sony is just planning on slipping a combo (or at least 4x drive) in the unit.

It’s been pretty obvious that the PS3 would slip, with it being March and developers still not having final hardware to work on, but November seems pretty late, it will be interesting to see how they keep the hype machine rolling all year long.

Hopefully we will learn more about Sony’s next generation plans tomorrow.

PlayStation 3 Details To Be Revealed Tomorrow

Posted in General at 6:38 pm by corneliusw

Tomorrow (March 15th) Sony will hold the “PlayStation Business Briefing 2006 March” in Tokyo from 3pm. So, the Japanese do intend to reveal something about the PlayStation 3. The official announcement (issued today through Reuters) is rather vague and doesn’t provide many details. The statement only mentions that it will be an event to announce the future of the PlayStation side of Sony’s business.

However, we do know for sure that Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi will be attending this meeting, so there will be something important going on. And, I ask you, what could be more important than the PlayStation 3?

These events typically address platform strategy, loyalty structures, development-related plans and other details that aren’t as interesting to us, but the fact that they opened the meeting up raises the possibility that there might be more (Yuta Sakurai, a senior analyst with Nomura Securities)

On the other hand, don’t get your hopes too high, ’cause it’s highly unlikely that Sony will be talking too much about its new console. Some analysts believe Sony would have planned a much bigger event in order to disclose details about a launch schedule and software lineup, or some info about the final design of the console and controller. I guess we’ll see tomorrow what’s all the fuss about.

New PS3 details next week?

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:02 pm by corneliusw

Covering a recent event held in Japan focussed around Dynasty Warriors BB, KOEI’s vice-president, Kiyoshi Komatsu, is reported to have told journalists of a significant Sony event taking place in Japan on March 15th.

It’s believed that new information on the Playstation 3 will be announced at the event, which will hopefully provide clarification on the amended release schedule and new demonstrations of the next-gen format in action.

Sony however has yet to comment on the event, so it seems we’ll just have to wait and see at this stage.

Variety Claims PlayStation 3 Delay

Posted in General at 8:47 pm by corneliusw

A new interview with Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer by Hollywood trade magazine Variety has indicated that the PlayStation 3 will be delayed until later in the year, due to complications revolving around the consoles’ complex chipset.

The Variety article attributes the delay to the company “fine-tuning? the console’s technology, referring to the PlayStation 3 as a “the poor man’s Blue-ray [sic]?, and suggests that the console will be released before the end of the year, but does not include a specific comment from Stringer confirming this.

The only direct quote from Stringer on the subject suggests that if the PlayStation 3 “delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up”, presumably referring to rival consoles from Microsoft and Nintendo. Regarding the Blu-ray format in general, Stringer is quoted as saying, “Once Microsoft picked sides it was clear we were going to be in a battle royale.” He also added, “We won’t be stampeded” by Microsoft into rushing decisions “that are there forever.”

The article does not mention a specific territory when discussing the date of the console’s new launch, but it is implied that it is referring to North America. Few analysts have ever expected a Western launch for the PlayStation 3 in spring, although it is now looking increasingly likely that the Japanese launch will also not take place until this summer at the earliest.
