PlayStation 3 release date delayed due to piracy concerns

The release of the Playstation 3 is being delayed due to the threat of piracy, Sony has announced.

At the Taipei Game Show, the managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Asia, Mr Tetsuhiko Yasuda, told reporters of Japanese news outlet Mainichi that Sony would not launch the PS3 until it could handle the troubles posed by counterfeiters.

“We want to be completely prepared when we bring PlayStation 3 to the marketplace. Our No. 1 competition is not other companies but counterfeiters.

We want to work with governments to stop this.?

Yasuda said that Sony was yet to decide when it would begin marketing the new console.

The Playstation 3 will use the new Blu-ray next-generation DVD format for their game media. Part of the delay of the Playstation 3 release date may be caused by uncertainties concerning Blu-ray’s copy protection systems. Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator (AACS LA) manages the content stored on next-generation media such as Blu-ray Discs.

Heise online reports that the AACS copy protection for Blu-ray disc and HD DVD is delayed again:

“Last Friday, the meeting of the AACS LA was to resolve the final specifications of the new Advanced Access Content System (AACS). But insiders are reporting that no such agreement was reached. Instead, it is said that an important member of the Blu-ray Disc Association is still voicing concerns about the interaction of AACS and the additional BD+ protection for Blu-ray movies. The next meeting is scheduled for February 23rd and 24th.

Without the AACS specification, the copy protection keys that manufacturers of drives and media need cannot be produced. For instance, manufacturers such as NEC, Pioneer, Samsung, and Toshiba are eagerly awaiting the specifications so they can implement AACS in their equipment.

Hollywood movie studios are insisting that such protection be included in all drives. “

As the Playstation 3 is equipped with a Blu-ray disc drive, Sony may be forced to wait until the problems with the AACS have been resolved before commiting to a release date for the PS3 console.

I am very excited about all the game systems coming out. Soon we want be worring about getting the new game systems. We will be worring about getting the new upgrades. Because these systems are rapidly turning into small computers that the monitors are your TV and the controlers are hand-held. Sony you guys rock.

P.S. I hope that when Snake dies Raiden takes his place in destroying every new Metal Gear. RIP SOLID SNAKE & BIG BOSS.
